Hi everyone,

I’m confirming that you all received the msg below regarding California
State funding?

If not, let me know so that we can update Will’s mailing list. He did say
that for some of our stations, the contact was not always the General
Manager.

The critical next step is for each station to reach out to our elected
representatives as describe below. There are talking points attached, as
well as a copy of the funding proposal and the letter recently shared with
CA leaders.

Let me know if you have any questions or need more information.

Be well, stay safe.

Frank

California Public Radio Stations,

Last week with the support of the California Public Radio and California
Public Television leadership, we sent letters that provide updates on the
incredible work you've done in response to COVID-19 to the Governor and
leadership of the state legislature. Those letters also reiterated our
request for state funding to fund programs that can assist the state in
early childhood education, public safety alert and warning, and increased
critical news and information. The pandemic has showcased how valuable
public media is to California and your ability to nimbly respond to your
communities' needs.

The next step in this state funding advocacy process is for stations to
meet with your legislators to discuss the work you are doing and how state
funding would enhance that work and the work of all the public radio and
television stations across the state. I encourage you to reach out to your
state legislators and request a meeting via telephone or Zoom. I have
drafted a scheduling request template you can use to help facilitate that
request.

To find the legislators that represent your station's coverage area, you
can use this website: http://www.legislature.ca.gov/districts.html.

Additionally, California Public Radio and California Public Television are
being assisted in these efforts by Marvin Pineda, founder and partner of
California Advocacy. Marvin is providing his services pro-bono to assist
our stations with critical advocacy work in Sacramento. Marvin is cc'd on
this email. Please reach out to Marvin and me with any questions as you
begin your outreach to your legislators.

In addition to the previously mentioned scheduling request template, you
will also find attached:

-A copy of the letter that was sent to the Governor and the state
legislature leadership
- this letter is a great overview of the work of
the stations across the state and could be used during your conversation
with your legislators to talk about how stations have responded to COVID
and the importance of state funding. The examples in the letter were pulled
from the responses I received from the COVID-19 survey I previously
circulated. If you would like to edit your station's example, or if you
would like me to add your station to the document, just let me know and I
will be happy to send you an updated version.

-*Talking points for meetings with legislators *- these can help prep you
for your meeting with some of the best messaging on the importance of state
funding.

-Proposal for state funding - this proposal was the result of
conversations with the Governor's Chief of Staff and what may be palatable
to the Governor for one-time state funding. This proposal focuses on the
strengths of California's public radio and TV stations with projects tied
to California Newsroom, early childhood education and the Early Earthquake
Warning System.

-Contact list of state legislators - once you've identified the
legislators in your coverage area, use this list to find the email
addresses for the legislators' chiefs of staff and schedulers' email
addresses. Using these contacts will make the scheduling request process
easier.

If you need any other information or would like to discuss this further,
please don't hesitate to email me and we will find a time to talk.

Thank you for all you do!

Will
