Subject: [areps] ALERT! University-licensed stations: Paycheck Protection
Program
To: [email protected]

Dear Colleagues:  Our efforts to bring financial relief to public media
include enabling university-licensed stations to qualify for the SBA’s
Paycheck Protection Program.  While some public broadcasters secured PPP
loans, PPP assistance has been unavailable for a large cohort of stations
licensed to universities and colleges. We’re seeking to change that! With
Congress now working furiously to negotiate and finalize the next financial
relief package, we have an opportunity to bring additional financial relief
to university-licensed stations. But we need your help NOW.  TODAY!

We’re working in cooperation with the University Station Alliance to expand
PPP eligibility for university-licensed stations.  To make communicating
with your lawmakers as seamless as possible, The University Station
Alliance and our Policy & Representation team have collaborated to create
an easy-to-use email template you can customize to fit your station.  If
we’re successful in persuading Congress to adopt these changes to PPP,
newly eligible stations will have an additional financial resource to
continue essential services to public media’s audiences.

You can take action by visiting either the NPR stations webpage here
https://act-us-alliance.org/ or the University Alliance webpage here
http://www.us-alliance.org/.  You’ll find a “Take Action
https://act-us-alliance.org/” email communication link with a sample email
to your Senators.  After you’ve personalized the pre-populated sample email
message to address your station’s challenges, simply click send to
communicate support for these important PPP modifications to your Senators
and Senate Small Business Committee leaders.

We have an issue brief here
https://www.nprstations.org/template/download_file_frame.cfm?f=L3Blcm1hbGluay9wb2xpY3lhbmRyZXAvUFBQX0lzc3VlX0JyaWVmX1JldjdfMjRfMjAucGRm&l=Issue%20Brief:%20Expanding%20SBA%27s%20Paycheck%20Protection%20Program%20to%20Provide%20Financial%20Relief%20for%20University-Licensed%20Public%20Broadcast%20Stations%20(July%202020)&track=false&ad=true
to provide more background and some suggestions as you consider
customizing your email to lawmakers.

We need you to connect with your lawmakers. Today! Now! Your communication
is key to our success.  Please contact with us with questions or for
additional information.

Thank you!

Frank --

Based on the conversations you might have had to date with Virginia at U:SA or Mike and Joni at NPR, is there any sense of whether assistance provided to a qualifying station might reduce the size of a grant to an institutional licensee?

In other words, might a licensee see this as unwelcome competition for money that would otherwise be directed towards scholarships, preserving faculty positions, etc.?  If this is the case, I would imagine GM's at our institutionally licensed stations would want to consult with the appropriate VPs, administrators, et al.

Thanks for any insights you can offer or obtain for us.
