AB 5 Concerns?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone paid attention to CA AB 5:

This is the recently passed “gig-work” bill primarily known for affecting
drivers for Uber, Lyft and other app-based services.

But it looks like it will have an impact on us as well. There is a partial
carve out allowing “publishers” to hire freelancers for up to 35
separate “content
submissions” in a given year. The law exempts more than 20 professions, but
not our profession.

The Columbia Journalism Review published this full article:

For KCBX, this could affect our music festival where we pay stipends
to volunteers
who manage various aspects of the festival in addition to our operation
which utilizes freelancers in various capacities that are identical to or
similar to positions held by employees.

I’m about to discuss with our State Senator (who’s a member). I’m wondering
if anyone else has researched this and come up with definitive answers?

Thanks,

Frank
