Hi everyone, As you may know, we have continued working throughout 2020 toward our goal of securing state funding for California's public media stations. Because of the pandemic, the challenge in securing state funding may be greater; however stations have demonstrated their unparalleled ability to nimbly respond to their communities' needs and provide needed education, public safety, and news and information resources. Because of this, we think that the case for state funding is stronger now than ever before. Over the past year, we have been building a strengthened narrative based on the work of the stations in response to COVID and the wildfires. We have also bolstered our efforts in Sacramento by adding lobbyist Marvin Pineda of California Advocacy to our team. Marvin graciously offered his services pro-bono to our effort because of the value his family sees in public media. Will Glasscock is continuing to carry out our state funding proposal and advocacy efforts, in conjunction with a working group of tv, radio and joint licensee stations who are overseeing the effort. The next steps for the process will happen rapidly. Marvin has created a target list of state legislators who serve on the committees that are key to this effort and Will has assigned them to the stations where their districts overlap with stations' broadcast coverage areas. Marvin and Will are also working on the talking points, office contact information and other materials that will assist you in facilitating a conversation with the target legislators. When these materials are ready, Will Glasscock will email you the list of target legislators and materials. *It is critical that stations reach out to our target legislators quickly to request a (virtual) meeting. Our goal is for these conversations to take place before the end of the year. *Through these conversations, you can introduce legislators to the important work of your station and California's public media stations, as well as discuss the unique funding needs and the potential for stations to assist the state in response to and recovery from COVID with support from the state.
