Overview
The latest on a potential “Super Regional” gathering for 2023
There is a strong sense from the PRRO leaders, as well as the ERPM Board,
and the surveys completed by WSPR and ERPM, that we should attempt to hold
a meeting of General Managers in 2023. There has been a great deal of
turnover in station leadership and that trend is expected to continue,
meaning the need is high.
The current preference is:
· Hold a Summit of leaders at NPR alongside Marta McLellan Ross’s
proposed plans for a music station leaders meeting on October 16-17. This
would be set at NPR with no specific hotel, but rather a suggested number
of options. This also coincides with the CPB board meeting.
· Potential dates would be October 17 – 18.
· We are looking at a day and half’s worth of meeting activity on a
single-track set of topics facing stations. Low-key, low cost, leadership
oriented.
· Proposed name: Public Radio Leadership Summit.
· Results oriented – attendees walk away with something that they
can apply at their station.
We have a proposal from John Hess to coordinate the effort, since none of
us has time to take it on ourselves. We should note that we are not
thinking about a major “conference,” but more of a summit and training
session.
Next steps:
· Connect with NPR (Gemma Hooley). Kerry Swanson has a call into
her.
· Have John Hess prepare a proposal of work, including the option
of a GM 101 session.
· Develop a short survey of stations concerning summit topics.
o Content strategy related to changing demographics
o Digital platforms and audience development
o Erosion of terrestrial radio
o NPR Network discussion
o Need for better understanding of data
o Funding challenges
· Begin looking at possible other supporters, including CPB.
It was also suggested that we should develop PRRO sponsored informal
gatherings at PMDMC and PRPD for GM’s who are attending those meetings. We
will look for GM’s who are members of the PRRO organizations to coordinate
these gathers.
